Project Proposal from Yue Dongxiao

Participant Profile:

Yue Dongxiao graduated from Physics Dept. of Beijing University in 1989, graduated from Univ. of Minnesota in 1995, with master's degree in computer and information science, Ph. D. in physics. Since graduation from Univ. of Minnesota, he has worked in various software companies. In 1997, he founded Netbula LLC, a software development company initially specialized in development tools for distributed computing.

Netbula is a technological leader in RPC (Remote Procedure Call) development tools for distributed computing, its flagship products are PowerRPC for UNIX and Windows NT/95/98, ONC RPC for Win32 and JRPC for the Java(tm) platform. Netbula RPC customers include many Fortune 500 companies and prestigious institutions, such as CMU, CompuServe, FedEx, Fujitsu, HP, Merril Lynch, MIT, Nokia, Nortel, Sony and Tektronix. Netbula has strong technical capabilities in areas of networking, compiler, and general software development in C++/C and PERL. Currently, Netbula is focused on developing software for the web.

AnyBoard and AnyEMail are key Internet software products for the company. Utilizing the technologies developed for these products, Netbula is working to develop a whole suite of web applications, including AnyForm, AnyShop, AnyECard, AnyEPhoto..., that will become a one-stop solution to empower any web community, large and small.

Proposed Project:

The UTeaching E-Learning System

The uteaching e-learning system currently under development is a software platform which allows any educational institution, organization or business to quickly build a online virtual school, complete with user management, course management, assessment management, interaction and communication tools. A customer would purchase a software license of the uteaching system and install it on an Internet or intranet web server. Once installed, the administrator of the system can create a virtual school via the web browser. Instructors can add courses and classes, students can register for classes. Students can view lessons online, do assignment online, take tests on line, submit paper on line, discuss questions with instructors and peers online. Instructors can distribute course material, monitor student progress, perform evaluation of students, all via a web browser.

The UTeaching system consists of following components

1) A school management system for creating/managing schools and departments

2) A course management system for creating/managing courses and course events

3) A registration system for student registration

4) A class management system for creating/managing classes, for which students can sign up.

5) A assessment management system for creating/managing assessment/assignments.

6) A user interaction system which allows instructors and students to communicate async or in realtime.

7) A billing system for tracking payments.

8) A analytical system for analyzing the effectiveness of learning.

With the deployment of a uteaching system, an existing school can quickly published their entire curriculum to the web for people all over the world to take, any existing training can be made online with great savings of cost... the economic benefit of such a system is obvious.

Not only this, the uteaching system will completely change how people learn things. With such a system, people can learn from anytime, from anywhere, with quick access to vast amount of learning resources at their finger tips. They can also improve the efficiency of their learning style, as the system track the user's actions in great detail and can generate helpful reports from a user's activity history. E-learning is an ongoing revolution to education, and UTeaching promises to be a software system which makes e-learning possible.

Currently, Netbula has finished the initial design of the system and has started coding the implementation. Netbula is seeking collaboration from Chinese companies and institutions.
